Remuneration

physicians.novascotia.ca

In Nova Scotia, our physicians provide an exceptional level of care and we highly value their time and talent. We are a leader in innovative payment plans for physicians. Nationally, compensation for physicians in Nova Scotia is competitive.

Master Agreement

Funding for physicians in Nova Scotia is negotiated through a contract with Doctors Nova Scotia, commonly called the Master Agreement. Physicians in Nova Scotia are provided with an innovative approach for compensation through the new Master Agreement with Doctors Nova Scotia (April 2008 - March 2013). Our physicians are compensated in one of two ways: through fee-for-service or through an alternative funding plan.

Fee-for-Service

In Nova Scotia, fee-for-service physicians bill the government for eligible services provided to patients. This billing is done through Medical Services Insurance (MSI), which is administered by Medavie Blue Cross.

Alternative Funding

Alternative funding refers to methods other than fee for service used to compensate physicians. Nova Scotia is proud to provide alternative funding plans that recognize, and compensate for, the range of services doctors provide in addition to direct patient care. These include payments for emergency room, on-call, and sessional work as well as academic funding plans (AFPs) and alternative payment plans (APPs).

Physicians practicing in teaching hospitals such as the QEII Health Sciences Centre and the IWK Health Centre are paid under AFPs. Physicians practicing outside of teaching hospital areas are paid under APPs.
