In 2002, Nova Scotia became the first province in Canada to establish a stand-alone department dedicated entirely to health promotion. Over the last two years, more than 50 organizations have worked with this department to create a strategy to prevent chronic disease (PDF). We’re using this information to develop a long-term plan for a healthier Nova Scotia.
While we still have work to do, our commitment to prevention is paying off. So far we’ve seen a decrease in tobacco use, higher physical activity levels, and the development of a number of effective campaigns dealing with things like addiction prevention.
